A one wire alternator won't charge until the first time the motor reaches
1800 to 2000 RPM but I believe he said he had an alternator with an external
regulator.

 

I agree with the others who said to check connections and the belt. If that
doesn't fix the problem it's time to have the alternator checked out by a
repair shop.

I think some alternators dont charge at idle, but if you hit the gas they
do. That may be why the light comes on.
