153 tooth flywheels are on all small block V-8's EXCEPT the small block 400. 168 tooth flywheels are on ALL big block engines and the 400 small block. Yes, the starters are different. The 168 tooth flywheel allows for a 12" clutch as opposed to the 10.5: clutch found on small block cars.
Do a search on in the transmission section of Team Chevelle for more info.

Subject: [Chevelle-list] Flywheel - number of teeth
In building up my 396 motor for my 67, I am looking at a new flywheel. I see an option to have either 153 teeth or 168 teeth. Why is there a difference? Are these different diameter, or do you need to have a different starter gear? I plan to use the Lakewood bell housing, so the diameter should not be a problem.
Advice?
Thanks in advance.
Bill
