[Chevelle-list] hood springs

When I replaced my hinges a year ago on my "69" I made up a tool to put the springs back on with.   It is a T-handle affair out of 1/4 inch square stock with a handle welded on one end and a couple of links of 3/8 chain welded on the other.  I did the bit with spreading the spring with the floor jack and putting nails in between the coils.  The less distance you have to pull to to get the spring loop over the ears on the hinge the better off you are.  Put the spring loop over the back ear of the hinge and hook the other end of the spring to the chain loop on the tool.  Lean over the fender and pull forward and hook it over the front ear of the hinge.  Repeat on opposite side.  If all goes well the nails should drop out when your hinge is in place.  This may require more than one person to assist you.  With mine I have a cowl-induction hood aftermarket and it was plenty heavy.  One guy held the hood up and two of us pulled on the spring with
the tool I described.  Hope this helps.  Good Luck !!!!!!

Thanks Bo

Great Idea. My ex always thought I had every car tool ever made. I’ll have to check this one out! I have a nice holiday weekend and I thought I’d install the gas tank. Seems I lost the little extension wire that connects the gas gauge to the harness. Oh well:(

One more tip if all else fails, see your local Chevy dealer and order the hood spring installer tool.  Not making this up, it is listed in the assembly manual.
