You pretty much summed it up your self. IF you blending a worked area into a already finished panel the Finnish Sander is what you want.
if you plowing down plastic to rough cut and area or blasting off paint to pre prep it for mud work or you striping a panel of all paint the Production is you DA of Choice. With finesse you can do all with the production gun especially if you have an in line regulator on the gun ( most do)

 YMMV

What is the practical difference between a "Production" sander and "Finishing" sander. For automotive work which would I use? Thinking about the IR 4152 or 4151 - http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/IR-4151-or-4152-6-Ultra-Duty-Vacuum-Ready-D-A-Sander_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742Q2em153Q2el1262QQcategoryZ63693QQihZ022QQitemZ350052120324QQtcZphoto

Or do I need both? I know the finishing will leave a smoother surface and the production will cut faster. Thx.-- Rick Schaefer72 TPI El Camino
