[Chevelle-list] Mis-matched Speedometer Gear and Rear End Ratio

In that light I have another question. I had a TH350 and stuck in a Saginaw
4 speed behind the little 307. It seems the TH350 had some kind of adapter
on it and will not fit on the Saginaw. It looks like the speedo cable
should hook up to the transmission directyly. Of course, that is if I can
thread it thru the shifter linkage. Any thoughts or ideas???

Great news! Mr. Aldrichs page has helped many enthusiasts and I hope the
page stays up for a long time to come.

Thanks to Dale & Larry for getting back to me - Dale's suggestion of the
Chevelle Engineer site hit a "home run" and provided me with the information
my mechanic needed - Providing the parts numbers made it very easy and we
located the correct sleeve - It will be in my car before dusk tonight and I
won't have to worry about accidental speeding - Thanks Guys

Try http://chevelleengineer.home.comcast.net/speedo.htm for some very good
information on speedometer gear selections. Never heard of a 3.49 gear
ratio but 3.31s were standard I believe. Check
http://www.chevellestuff.com/generic/axlecodes.htm near the bottom of the
page for Chevrolet gear sets.

Hello Again -
I have a problem and would like to pick your collective knowledge - I have a
'70 SS 396 which has I'm told a posi rear with a 3.49 gears - The problem is
when I'm driving my speedometer indicates a high speed than I'm actual doing
by 10mph - When my mechanic pulled out the speedometer gear he found that it
had 39 teeth - So I ordered a few different gear with more teeth - The
problem I have now is the diameter of the existing 39 tooth gear is 1 7/16"
and the replacement gears are 1 3/4" - In addition, they will not fix inside
of the existing housing - The housing is stamped 36-37-38-39 which I assume
is the different gears it will accept - An suggestions on how I can get my
speedometer to give me a more accurate speed reading would be appreciated -
Rich
PS I've read that the only gears offered for my year were 3.31 so my
mechanic could be off in his
