[Chevelle-list] 66 Rear Quarter Extension Gasket Question

[rocky hill]

I'm replaceing what is called the paint chip gasket on
my rear quarter extensions. 

The replacement rubber looking from the end of it,
looks like a <U 

with one leg shorter than the other with a portion of
it on the short side that tapers down like a
windshield wiper blade. I know It just snaps on, but
does the flat taper part go up or down.
