[Chevelle-list] 12 Bolt yoke

Keith,

I'm confused here (not hard to do). If TH400 and M22 cars used the larger
1350 u-joints and every one you've seen have a u-bolt, it contradicts the
others with TH400 transmissions and the strap/bolt configuration.

It gets curiouser and curiouser.

--------------------------------------------------------
I'm pretty sure the key is what driveshaft and U-joints you had/have. Every

1350 style U-joint I've ever seen used a U-bolt style yoke. Don't quote me
on this but it's my understanding that driveshafts on cars with TH400 & M22

trannys used the larger 1350 U-joints. My '70 El Camino SS had an M21. The

driveshaft had the smaller 1310 U-joints and my original 12-bolt had the
strap style yoke. I now have a driveshaft with 1350 U-joints and I had to
change out my strap style yoke to a U-bolt style yoke.

As far as how that's applied to the different years, I can't say. My
limited knowledge is of '70's only.

In case you're wondering how to visually identify the 1310 & 1350 joints,
the 1310 joints have the retaining clip on the outside of the cup. It kind
of looks like @. The 1350 joint is physically larger and uses a C-clip on
the inner side of the cup. If you see one that uses both style retaining
clips, that's an adapter U-joint. These let you put a TH400 driveshaft yoke

on a driveshaft that originally had the small yoke. So, for example, you
could swap in a TH400 in place of a TH350 without having to get a new
driveshaft. Assuming the length was correct that is.

Are most of you guys running a u bolt or strap style pinion yoke? I guess I

am not sure what 12 bolt Chevelles came with? Mine didnt have one on it
when I bought the housing and I guess I dont know. I see a few on ebay that

use the straps for the u joints. Are all of them that way? Chaulk this one

up the rookie syndrome. Again.

Thank you
Ryan
