Eric, I am running the same setup (LS 1181 with 40K volt coil) that you
described in your post on Chevypunch.com. I increased the gap slightly,
I believe to .038". When I first got the Pertronix in the car I called
the tech line at Pertronix and asked them. They told me to not go over
.040". I also did not remove the resistance wire when I installed it in
my '70. The only thing I can see that this does is causes a little more
cranking time, approximately 5 seconds, before she fires up. I don't
mind that because in my opinion this sends a little oil to the top end
before it actually starts eliminating the dreaded dry starts. If you
don't like that you can turn the key to the run position and wait about
5 seconds then turn it to the start position and it will fire up
immediately. I am also getting ready to add the Pertronix Second Strike
to the '70. I was reading in, I believe, Super Chevy or Chevy High
Performance that opening the plug gap could be detrimental to the effect
you are looking for. Because the gap is wider it takes more energy to
make the spark jump the extra distance. That same article is were I read
that just by adding the Second Strike to the test vehicle it increased
horse power to the rear wheels by 14 horses with no other modifications.
Sorry for the long post.
