[Chevelle-list] oil concern

Harlan, I work in Petro-Chemical Plant for a major oil company, Chevron.
We make the engine oil additives that go into the base oils for Chevron
along with a few other companies that purchase our products to put into
their engine oils. It is true that the Zinc is being reduced in the
newer oils but it hasn't been removed completely. The reason for this is
that more and more of today's engines have OVHD cams and do not require
the amount of Zinc that was once in the oils. Another reason the amount
of Zinc is being removed is because the blow by in the exhaust is
fouling the catalytic converters. The heavy duty engine oils used for
diesel engines has not, for the time being, began reducing the amount of
Zinc in their formulas. Unfortunately this too may be coming soon
because of the government requiring the diesel engines to also become
more environmentally friendly. I personally run the Chevron DELO 400
15W40 in my Chevy. It not only still contains a good bit of Zinc but
also contains some Molybdenum with also helps to coat the lobes of the
cam to help reduce cam lobe wear. On the down side we are also in the
development stages of a new additive that will be used in the heavy duty
engine oil packages that will reduce the amount of Zinc in these oils
also. Hopes this helps.

Subject: [Chevelle-list] oil concern
Hey
wondering if anyone else has heard this, i am not sure if it is just B/S
or if it is true. i have heard it now from 2-completely diffrent
sources: NAPA and my engine builder.
i was told they took out the Zinc (?) from motor oil so now vehicles
with flat tappets (lifters) are eating the camshafts- i am not sure how
long it takes to destroy the cam??
but i think i heard a diesel oil still has this Zinc--
also there is a Penzoil racing oil that still has it but is hard to
find.
