[Chevelle-list] Compression Test

John- I would suggest a leakdown test for your motor. It can be done
without any fancy tools. Take your compression tester lead and plug it into
the offending cylinder and put compressed air to it. You won’t get a number
without a gauge, but it’s easy enough to tell whether you have any air
leakage into either the crankcase or intake or exhaust. The reason I
suggest this is because I recently had a tuning issue, the mains would start
coming in on the passenger side of my carb at 1400 rpm, driver’s side didn’t
come in until 2000. After cleaning the carb every way possible, then
finally borrowing one from a friend that acted the same way, I eliminated
the carb. I did a compression test on the motor on the first 3 cylinders on
the passenger bank and came up with 152, 155 and 155. Plenty close enough.
#2 cylinder exhaust had been running quite a bit cooler than the other
cylinders, however. I finally did a leakdown test on it and discovered a
leak on the intake valve on #2. I pulled the head off and tested it by
putting water down the intake port and it leaks like a sieve. Anyway, if I
hadn’t done the leakdown test I would still be wondering what was going on.

I did a compression test on my small block 327..all the cylinders turned up
to be very close with the lowest being 152 psi and the highest being 155
psi...I can't find a reference anywhere to see if these numbers are within
specs or are too low....Can anyone help me out..???..My engine is burning a
little bit of oil and I suspect the valve guides are worn but wanted to do a
compression test to check the condition of the rings...
