Thank for the responses and they give me a good idea of options when it comes to rebuilding. My hope is that it does not call for a rebore and basic wall clean up will be all it needs.

As far as engine condition. I have not done a leak test, but plan on doing a compression on it myself. I can tell the intake and timing cover have been off by previous owners by the ultra blue gasket ooz. It runs rich and carbons the plugs, but blame this on the 750 Holley on it and have leaned it out as much as possible. Replacing it with a rebuilt correct 580 Holley. Blows some smoke when I get on it. PCV system working fine.

Thanks again,

Krister

I’ve seen early blocks taken as far as 4.250, std bore for a 427/454 block. Sonic checking is the critical factor. Not all machine shop will be able to perform this procedure, however.

What is the condition of your engine now? Are you sure it needs to be bored? A lot of times a simple clean-up with a hone will take care of it. Have you done a leakdown test?

I am curious on much can a 396 block be bored over? Not knowing how much my numbers 396 has been bored in the past - I am hoping there is still one more cut in order to true up the walls for new rings / pistons on a future rebuild.

Thanks,

Krister Meister
