With the aid of a mirror you can get the casting off the back of the engine block if there is room.  Usually small balancers are older 283, 307, and 327.  I believe most sb400 have 3 freeze plugs per side as well as a healthy notch out of the balancer.  Of course the real old blocks have the PCV behind the distributor/intake manifold and older yet had the vent tube.  I am sure there are other signs but nothing beats the number stamped on the block/casting # to know for sure.  My $.02

assuming the engine is in the car and can't get to the number on the pass side head.
is there any way to tell a  283, 305/307, 350, 400 apart??
