I'm a bit late to this discussion, but...
I'm installing TPI + Megasquirt system, so I needed a high-pressure
fuel pump. It's easier to pull it from my local wrecker's than it would
be to sump my stock tank.
There are several kinds of B-body fuel tank that I have found: sedan,
wagon, 9C1, TBI, and LT1. The TBI fuel pumps operate at a lower
pressure than the LT1. The sedan tanks have the fill behind the license
plate, and the wagon tanks have the fill on the left (I think) side. I
actually bought a TBI tank from a 91 Cadillac, but it was not baffled
inside. I returned it and pulled one from a 95 LT1 police (9C1 code)
Caprice. (While I was at it, I pulled the fast-ratio steering box, rear
disc setup, master cyl + distribution block, and front spindles with
12" discs. Total spent? $140. Yeah!) This tank is baffled. The tanks
are externally identical.
The tanks are about 1.5" too wide to fit between the framerails on my
67. (framerail gap: 38", tank 39.5" wide) The internet rumour mill has
them fitting a bit better in the 70-72 style, but I don't happen to
have one of them on hand for measuring. The Caprice also had sheetmetal
stone shields to protect the tank, as well as some mounting straps that
look a bit beefier than the stock ones. As well, I cut a section of the
trunk floor from the Caprice - it's raised to clear the pump and hoses
from the tank. Some people put in access doors into the trunk floor.
New 9C1 Caprice fuel lines from GM cost about $200, so if they look to
be in good shape at the wrecker, grab them too. You'll need a special
tool to disconnect them from the tank.
While you're at it, take the rear sway bar as well. You'll need stock
rear control arms to use it - it installs under the arms, not bolted
between them. Apparently the front sway bars fit as well, but the one I
got is about 3" too wide for my chassis.
I hope this info helps, and I've been phoning around to rent a plasma
cutter all afternoon. Looking like the grinder's going to come out for
this one...
Dave.
