The answer to your original question...

Measure your manifold vacuum from the lowest point on the carburetor or
anywhere in the intake manifold.  A healthy engine should read a steady
needle from 15 to 22 in/Hg - subtract 1 in/Hg per every 1000 ft above
sea level.  Long duration cams and late ignition timing will lower your
idle vacuum too.
