[Chevelle-list] Out of Touch?

Please let me know if I'm totally out of touch with reality :).
Yesterday I went to look at a 65 chevelle malibu convertible. White with
blue interior, reported to be "numbers matching". It was a 30 footer at
best. Panels were generally straight, some peeling & cracking of paint
between the trunk lid & top well. Passenger front fender was pushed in
right at the front corner, looked like they sideswiped a garage door.
Looked like a 10 year old Earl Sheib paint job. Interior looked like it
was recently done. Door panels looked original with repair carpeting added
at the bottom 6 inches-I don't think that was original. Carpet good, Front
bench seat cover looked relatively new & clean except for a 2 inch gash
under the drivers butt. Recent aftermarket A/C added but the water pump
pulley had no provision for a belt???????? Motor looked like it could have
been original.
As I raised the hood to look at motor I asked how much. 20K! And the
look on my face must have confused the girl, she said, oh wait a minute let
me check the list inside. A minute later she returned Oh I was wrong its
30K! What the heck are these dealers smoking? I went in thinking it
would be in the 10-15K range. It was certainly an OK driver but 30K is
premium money for a 65 - at least I think it is.
I went there with the intent of really looking it over good, but decided
there was no point for further discussion. Is it
possible/likely/reasonable to look for a 65 convertible in the 10-15 K range
that isn't a basket case? Or am I really out of touch with the market.
