The '512' are the last three digits of the casting number used to help
identify engine blocks. The full casting number is 3963512; this block was
used for the 69 427 and both 70 and 71 454. One would have to look at the
casting date to see when it was made. The casting date is located on the
flange by the bell housing area and is in the format of a letter for the
month (A..L - Jan..Dec), one or two digits for the day and a single digit
for year - e.g., B250 would be February 25, 1970; B50 would be February 5,
1970.

Subject: [Chevelle-list] Engine Casting Block Number Question

Need some help. A friend of mine is looking at a '70SS. Engine is out as is
the trans and rear end. Seller says the engine is a '70 and has a casting
number on the block that is 512.

What is this 512 number?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
