I know 66 used the 'clamp' and bolt you're referring to and 67 used a
pigtail over a small 'top hat' with no other means of retention. The only
ones I've seen with big (4") spacers are coil spring 'lift kits' from the
late 60s and early 70s. Wheels with custom backspacing was almost unheard
of back then so these were added between the top hat and spring to raise the
rear end so reversed wheels and big tires would fit. Generally wasn't a
good idea - changed driveline angle and (in my case) caused severe wheel hop
which still ate up the sidewalls of N60x15 Mickey Thompson tires :*)

Subject: [Chevelle-list] Another rear end question from the rookie
I was looking through all my diagrams of the 12 bolt. I noticed that one of
the drawings showed a "clamp" that holds the rear coil spring down onto the
rear axle spring pertch. I was wondering if this was something that is
normally on our chevelles? All I know is that my car did not have them
installed on it when I tore it apart but I guess that doesnt really mean
anything. This is the first I had seen of them and was wanting to put it
back together right. Couldnt do it without you guys!!!
thanks
Ryan
