Subject: [Chevelle-list] Distributor/ timing questions
I plan on installing a Pertronix Ignitor II with their Flame Thrower coil
this week end and have a few questions:
I will need to install 1 or 2 shims above the distributor gear:
Is the easiest way to remove the set pin holding the gear to the shaft by
taping out pin with the same size round punch? Can the set pin be reused?
Can set pin be installed with tapping back in with hammer? Use any
Locktite?
That’s about the only way you’re going to get the pin out. I’ve never had a
problem re-using the pin. Just be careful not to mushroom the end of it.
Locktite is not needed, and probably wouldn’t do any good since there are no
threads to fill.
At 900 RPM warm idle, vac line to distributor plugged in, I am at 18* BTDC
and seems to run fine here. Physical position of distributor (with wires
installed in factory locations on cap) is turned clockwise more than what
factory position shows:
Could it be 1 tooth to far clockwise?
Unplug the vacuum line from the distributor and plug it off with a golf tee
or something similar. You can now read your base timing. What you are
reading with the line plugged in is your vacuum advance plus base timing.
Keeping the timing mark at 0* TDC. Can I move distributor back one tooth
(after turning back the oil pump slot to line back up with dist shaft)
without effecting the timing as long as the rotor still points to plug #1?
The distributor doesn’t care where it sits as long as the rotor is lined up
with the appropriate plug wire.
Are factory distributors painted gloss, semi gloss or satin?
Thank you for the help and any further insight to my questions is welcome.
