Rich,
If you look in your 66 Fisher body service manual,
section 9-29 view "A" item number 3 from the factory
there was a foam type gasket that lay in the groove
that runs around the outer edge of the quater
extension where it meets with the quarter panel.
It act as a cushon between the two surfaces and keeps
the paint from chipping when the two pieces are drawn
together, and also act as a water seal. It is called a
Paint Chip Gasket, that is the name of it in the
Fisher Body Manual.
The replacement doesn't look like the original. I
figured it out yesterday when I removed my rear
quarter extensions to reseal, I have had a small leak
for the last 9 years and finally got around to fixing
it. The new gasket looks like this U> and id made of
rubber It clips around the lower edge and the flat
taper part lay across the groove, unlike the factory
original that lays IN the groove and was made of a
foam type material.
