[Chevelle-list] steering shaft hitting header

I just had a set of Hooker headers installed on my 67 Chevelle SS 396 clone and the steering shaft is hitting the header, even after the shaft has been ground down to almost round. My mechanic is wondering if the steering shaft could be "floating" up or down when I'm driving it. Could there be a bearing wore out in the steering column somewhere? Is this a possibility at all? He's already dimpled the header also. Thanks in advance.
I'm disabled and can't do the work myself.
