Tempino
Some good Monday morning reading,
Oldsmobile did build one 1967 truck (El Camino style). It was a
one off production car that was specifically built for Evel Knievel.
The story goes...about a decade ago I was at work consuling a
cashier who had recently lost her husband I told her to let me know if
there was anything I could do for her. Her only reply was helping
clean out the garage..parts, cars, tools.
I walked into the garage immediately noticed a roundy round truck
in mid complete status, a 55 T-bird and a really strange looking
Oldsmobile....Yep an El Camino looking Olds.
I was perplexed..I looked at every nook and crany on the car and
thought...damn..this is a good conversion. Can't even see where
things were pieced together. Upon looking through it I found Receipts
from Evel, Pics and other items...hmm What had I uncovered I
wondered. I gave a call to GM and they gave me the rundown that the
car was a one off that was produced for Evel to parade around with his
bike in the back. He also towed a small red/white/blue trailer with
it. Eventually I contacted Evel's agent. The agent took down some
info and said he would call back. He called back and said Evel was
interested in talking about the car and gave me his number. Evel
seemed to be more than a slightly cranky old man..he confirmed the
story that others had told me. Old's built it for him. He said he
sold the car years before and expected that it was in a junkyard by
now. Once he was told the car was still solid and un-molested..well
since he changed the interior to fuzzy
70's motiff. He was interested in getting the car back. Best part
is he expected to get the car back for free. The widow said a big
Heck no...She kept the car for several more years and then sold it.
The most disappointing part is that I do not have any of the
pictures...And that is just stupid on my part.
She recently contacted me to fire up the T-bird again...Maybe I
will find out where oldsmobile is at.
And that's the rest of the story....
