[Chevelle-list] 69 SS

Guys, I think I already know the answer but I'm asking for a friend. A buddy has a 69 SS, 396 four speed car. He wants to sell it but doesn't know how to verify that's it is a true SS.
No build sheet, window sticker, original BOS etc. Is there anyway from the VIN or Data plate to verify it is an SS? Also the engine was changed at some point so numbers don't match. Anyway, I said I'd ask.
