Hi Jerry,
The hole you're referring to is called a "weep" hole and yes, that means the
pump is on its last leg. Since you're about to replace the water pump, I
recommend you take a look at the pumps offered by Stewart Components
http://www.stewartcomponents.com/ . They make high quality parts that
actually work as advertised. I had one on my El until I switched over to a
serpentine system which required a reverse rotation pump.

Subject: [Chevelle-list] BB Water Pump
The water pump on my '70 LS5 is leaking fluid and it appears to be coming
out the bottom part of the pump. Not around the bolts or the block to pump
gasket. Looks like it is coming from a cast hole on the bottom end of the
pump. Not sure what the purpose of this hole is and there is the same cast
hole on the top side of the pump.
Hoses and clamps and radiator cap are new.
Anyone with some experience on this issue? Is this the start of pump
failure?
