Hi Dale,

Been out of town - It is a sooty build up, cleans up rather easy especially in an air / media blaster for spark plugs. Original engine with 69K on it. Burns a little when accelerating hard. A previous owner did some rebuild work around 36K what was done I have no record of. I can tell the intake, timing cover and pan was off. I had the carb off recently and cleaned out the carbon powdery buildup that plugged the LF vacuum passage that goes down into the intake - just below the throttle body. RF was already open.

Engine is probably a little tired and I plan on rebuilding it here in the next year or two. I will switch points/condenser over to the "Igniter" electronic ignition that fits into the original distributor..

Thanks for you thoughts,

First thought is it’s running too rich (poor compression, carb setting too rich, choke not operating properly, etc.), spark is very weak, or even oil leaking past the valve guides. It the buildup a black, sooty material that cleans easily and plug otherwise looks good or a hard carbon deposit? Can’t imagine after only 30 miles of driving it being a hard deposit.

What is the main cause or causes of carbon? I clean my plugs (abrasive media blaster for spark plugs) and after 30 miles of local driving they are covered in carbon again.

Have a great July 4th
