[Chevelle-list] Breather????

Prior to any smog considerations, crankcase fumes were vented via a 'draft
tube' located just behind and on the driver's side of the distributor. An
early method of combating this was to remove the tube and install a check
valve and route the fumes to the base of the air cleaner - Positive Engine
Ventilation. In 1966, RPO K24 (Closed Positive Engine Ventilation) went a
step further and sealed the cap of the oil fill tube on the front of the
intake and had a PCV valve inline between the oil fill tube and the
carburetor.
Anyway, this canister also prevents oil from splashing out the hole in the
back of the block in the lifter valley. I suppose one could remove the
canister and block the hole with something like a freeze plug and you could
also block the hole in the block beside the distributor with another plug.
As long as both covers are vented, one with an oil fill hole and breather
and a PCV valve is installed in the other cover somewhere, I don't see why
it wouldn't work just like later engines.

Subject: [Chevelle-list] Breather????
Hi Guys...
I'm doing a intake manifold change on my 327 and I was wondering if anyone
knows if I can remove that breather canister under the manifold(bolted to
the top of the block...Its about the size of a pop can..maybe a bit smaller)
if I am using valve covers with breathers in them..??I left it in before and
ran the hose down the back of the block and let it vent there.I just don't
see the reason to have it there if there are vents(breathers) in the valve
covers...
Thanx very much
John
