[Chevelle-list] Carrier rebuild

Ryan- I run an M21 in my 64. I’ve had it behind a 283 up to currently a
healthy 454, with 2.73 gears all the way down to the current 4.56s. I found
it was reasonable with 3.23s, and better launches with lower ratios. 3.55
worked pretty well, 3.73 was even better, but limited freeway speed because
I didn’t like to run 3200 rpm to do 65. I certainly wouldn’t go any lower
than that for a driver. I’m now looking into a Tremec TKO 600 to live with
my low gears. I’d sell you my tranny if I were closer to having the rest of
the change saved up for the new one.

If the 2.20 first gear in the m21/m22 muncies are a little too tall for
3.31's would I be better off to stick with my original plan of the 3.55's?
I know I am wanting the best of both worlds here but somewhere in the middle
would be nice.

It seems like used muncies around here (IA) are either totally junk or the
people that have them either wont sell them or they want more than what I
think would be reasonable. I found one at a swap meet this fall that the
output shaft was cracked and the guy still wanted $1500 for it. Maybe I am
just WAY off on my way of looking at it but that seemed way out of the
question. I guess this leads me into another question.... The local tranny
shop said they could probably get me a m22 for about $1000 plus rebuild
costs. Is that what I can be expecting to pay? I am leary to get one off
of Ebay becuase knowing as little as I do about tranny's that would be a
good way to throw away about $800 on a piece of junk. Sorry for the
ramblings but I know you guys know what you are talking about.....

Thanks

Ryan

PS - I have to ask the question.....Do any of you guys ( I know I can trust
the guys on the list) have any muncies lying around you would be willing to
part with? Seems like a crazy question doesnt it?Let me know and thanks
again!
