[Chevelle-list] Coil Springs

Having rebuilt the chassis on my '71 El Camino while it was stripped for a frame-off, I wasn't looking forward to doing the same on the '67 convertible I'm working on. On the 70 mile drive home from the powder coater I had an epiphany. I simply backed the trailer into my shop, loosened the ratcheting straps that were holding the frame on the trailer, jacked the trailer up, placed jack stands under it, then reinstalled the ratcheting cables. The frame was now held down with straps and I was able to jack the control arms and rear end up an down just as I would've with the body on and the engine installed. Handy working height, too. I found that it was easier to do without the spring compressor, although I did throw a chain around the springs for safety sake. Worked Great!

Dropping the whole lower control arm would help. Still would be a bugger to do without some weight.

My BB coils where a pita to get in to place. My compressors where too weak L

I ended up leaving the problem to a shop which also had a hard time getting them in to place.

He described the procedure as having “dropped the whole front suspension down” to get them in to place.

Exactly what he meant by that I’m not sure, sorry!

I need you guys to bail me out once again....

I took my front coil springs out last fall with no problem. However, trying to put the new ones back in is prooving to be a bigger task than I thought. I have read how other people on the new claim to have done it but they just dont seem to be working for me. How have you guys done it? The motor is out and I am putting in big block springs. Are there any tips or tricks out there you guys can share with me? I'll take anything at this point. It seems like suck a dumb thing to have a problem with but that is just how things work in my garage.

  Thanks again

  Ryan
