I had the same problem. The linkage on the Muncie shifter linkage is thin
and weak. It actually stretches when you shift. Live with it. Muncie at one
time had heavy duty linkage available.

Subject: [Chevelle-list] 66 SS 4 speed Muncie Shifter problem

I have a member with a 66 SS with a 4 speed Muncie shifter problem... here's
his Email... any suggestion/comments would be appreciated... Thanks in
advance!

I have a 66 SS with a 4 speed Muncie, my problem is this.... for several
years now my trans locks up between gears & requires me getting under the
car to move one of the shift levers to release the shifter/trans to go into
gear. It also has always necessitated going into 3rd gear prior to any
shifting particularly reverse. I have a Muncie shifter which has been
replaced with a new unit however, I preferred to keep the car as close to
stock as possible so didn't want to replace it with a non matching Hurst.
Now I'm beginning to wonder if the shifter is the problem at all or if the
source of my trouble is coming from the trans itself.

If anyone out their in CHEVELLE LAND has experienced a similar problem & can
recommend a course of action please advise. I would hate to pull a GOOD
factory style shifter out & replace it with a NON STANDARD Hurst if the real
source of the problem is the transmission. Any thoughts anyone.
